Your Guardian Angel
There are times in life as a teacher, you just feel the lows of it. Heck, even before being a teacher.. you have these un-satisfying feeling. Feeling that you are doing so much, but rewarded so little. Feeling you are just not more a servant to those of higher power. Feeling that you are no one, but have to behave like someone, just for the sake of the community and their perception. At this time, it is vital to take a step aside, lean back.. and catch a short episode of GTO or Great Teacher Onizuka.

I know, his methods may be unorthodox. He may be too perverted to even be a teacher… but its the story behind the story that counts. That he cares. No matter how bad he is.. or how impossible it may be for him to become the perfect teacher… He eventually wants the best for his students… and that is what most teachers want for their students. Too bad, the world is harsh, and judgmental… and before anything can be said or done, judgment will always be passed pre-emptively, making life hard for teachers, for us.. for me.
‘Work’ is a word pretty usual for teachers. The outside world will say that teachers are just too relaxed to be paid highly. But most don’t realize that there is more than the usual 7am-2pm work hours. Meetings, extra curricular activities and also paper work would consume so much more time. I’ve lived with teachers, and I am a teacher… so.. trust me.. it is never different for any teacher. Its the same. But ‘outsiders’ will say its an easy job, neglecting that teacher’s are always the ones torn behind educating, and actually saving their jobs fearing that extreme action will cause them more harm.
It comes to that extend that, we have almost daily meetings which are considered obligation, yet not our true core bussiness. Meetings that are sometimes worthless, but needed. Meetings that make it more tiring when you have to withstand your hungry roaring tummy which has not eaten anything from morning. It makes those meetings seem useless, and nothing more than just nonsense at times. Situations like this makes you weak.. and spiritless to do your job.

But when you look at those eager young minds (It’s what John Nash (Russel Crowe) said in the movie ‘A Beautiful Mind’), you tend to have a compassion to give them knowledge.. and try to give your best, even if you can’t… even if they don’t appreciate it at all… but then again, you keep going on… trying hard.. until you become weak and demoralized becuase of them. And then, GTO is the only medicine for me or us to realize…. there is more to teaching those subjects we teach… as the real education is actually teaching them about life…. the hard cold facts of our the CRUEL LIFE….

Maybe we teacher’s are just a guardian angel….

Being a teacher is being selfless - in a way. And teachers are people whom students will remember no matter how old they get. Though, being a teacher is tough.

Wow. That’s deep. I’ve never thought of it that way. Perhaps that’s why most people who’ve taught students before find passion in teaching. It’s like you said in the second last paragraph. Eager students tend to motivate you to go on teaching. From what I see, the community needs to give more credit to deserving teachers like you. Rock on, Cyril!

I used to watch GTO every morning and night during the 1st month of school to motivate myself and get energized for each class that I teach. It’s funny how the series misses a lot of characters and the drama of the manga series but it’s still an entertaining abridged version.
But the profession isn’t easy. Out of the 10 teachers who completed my Master’s program 4 years ago, only one other than myself is still teaching. Most have left because of issues with their ineffective and someimes hostile school administration.
Personally, on that note, I see myself moving towards the realm of administration. I think the move is inevitable for any teacher who wqnts to do more beyond their classroom walls. Although some people consider it the “dark side,” an effective and personable administration can encourage and support new teachers and make all the difference in the world regarding the school environment.
Keep up the faith and determinate fortitude my friend….your words have been heard and understood in this lifetime.
